It’s about time I tried to explain what progressive enhancement actually is – Piccalilli

I’m a long-time proponent of progressive enhancement to the point where readers are almost certainly bored, but I am like I am because it’s important. I’ve been saying the following for years:

We build for everyone. Not just for ourselves or our peer groups.

Do you want to build resilient front-ends? Do you want your front-end to work for everyone, regardless of browser and device? Do you want your website to work on poor connections? Do you want your website to work globally?

Have you answered yes to either or all of the above? What you need is progressive enhancement.

Few if any who design or develop for the Web haven’t heard the term ‘progressive enhancement’. But do folks really understand it? Andy Bell thinks not.
