Announcing the Ladybird Browser Initiative

July 4, 2024

Ladybird uses a brand new engine based on web standards, without borrowing any code from other browsers. It started as a humble HTML viewer for the SerenityOS hobby project, but since then it’s grown into a full cross-platform browser project supporting Linux, macOS, and other Unix-like systems.

In a scene I thought we’d very unlikely see again, the folks at LibertyOS, a brand new operating system have hived off there browser they have been developing as part of that project, as Ladybird. You’ll have to wait to try it out, with alphas not due til 2026. but it is well funded and run by people with serious experience so we’re not writing it off.
