Modern Health, frameworks, performance, and harm – Eric Bailey

An experience like Modern Health should be as lean and fault-tolerant as possible. It should not make 162 requests transferring ~15 MB just to hope it can show me two sanitized Corporate Memphis blob humans promoting a gamified growth funnel.

The things we build for the Web matter. It might be a shopping interface, booking site, or something in a sense much more important–a place in crisis folks can go to get vital information. Eric Meyer, with Sara Wachter-Boettcher, wrote a whole book on this, motivated in part by Eric’s experience at a moment of crisis for him and his family.
Here, another Eric, Eric Bailey, writes of his experience with a site people go to in crisis. One that requires 15MB of JavaScript to download just to load the front page.
It’s a sobering read, and one to store away for the next time yo need to advocate for a leaner, less complex front end.
