Live regions have a reputation for being “flaky” and inconsistent. While this can be attributed in part to shortcomings in current implementations, the problem can also be caused by developers misunderstanding how live regions are intended to work.
We use Live Regions here at Conffab for our interactive slides. Each slide when displayed is loaded into a live region that allows screen reader uses to listen to them (as well as skip them) using their own screen reader options (an alternative we explored were audio descriptions but these have significant drawbacks for this specific use case).
But they have a reputation for being hard to work with, an issue Patrick Lauke addresses here.
