How I’d use generative AI to modernize an app
February 27, 2024
So I won’t sit here and tell you that generative AI makes app modernization easy. Nothing does. It’s hard work and is as much about technology as it is psychology and archeology. But AI can make it easier. We’ll take any help we can get, right? I count at least five ways I’d use generative AI to make smarter progress on my modernization journey.

I’ve found using GPT4 (can’t vouch for the free version) to help develop to be incredibly empowering. I don’t think we are anywhere near non developers quickly and easily developing complex code, but as someone who knows a thing or two about software development, GPT is like power tools that make me more productive in a great many ways.
In turn this encourages me to try things I’d otherwise likely not-not because I don’t think I can do them, but because I really don’t know whether the task is a few minutes, hours or days.
We had a great introduction to using generative AI for software development at code last year from Lachlan Hunt to get you started.
Here Richard Seroter provides some thoughts about how you might modernise an existing code base using generative AI.
