Mesh gradients in CSS

At the BBC, we recently had a brand refresh. It was known internally as the Chameleon Project. Done in partnership with Wolff Olins – who had done branding projects for the likes of Google, Uber and TikTok – its aim was to take the BBC out of its dusty old past of Gill Sans typefaces and a vast array of sub-brands designed around the world of broadcast TV.

Mesh gradients are hot right now. If you’re not sure what they are, well you’ve seen them, just take a look at this article by the BBC’s Josh Tumath for more.

But they can be tricky to implement with CSS (though there are plenty of tools that have sprung up, this from Colorffy, and CSS Hero’s Mesher are just a couple) so Josh is proposing new syntax for CSS (and if you’ve not taken a look recently CSS’s gradient syntax and capabilities have become increasingly complex I recent years)
